Yeong-shin is a character in the Korean Netflix television series Kingdom portrayed by Kim Sung-kyu.

Personality[]

Yeong-shin is a serious, no-nonsense individual. He was the one who accidentally caused the outbreak in Jiyulheon, by boiling Dan-i's corpse into stew to feed the starving villagers. Upon her discovery of his actions, he argued with a horrified Seo-bi that the villagers' wellbeing was more important than respecting the dead. He is oftentimes seen as harsh and shrewd, not caring for the feelings and hesitations of others. Below his standoffish nature, he is a very caring person and expresses his compassion through actions (for example, when he tried to save a woman and her baby during the destruction of Dongnae).

History[]

Yeong-shin was a skilled soldier who fought during the Japanese invasions of Korea. He was from Sumang village, whose people were turned by Lord Cho Hak-ju into monsters to fight the Japanese. As a result he swore revenge on Cho Hak-ju in order to avenge his family.

He was suspected by Mu-yeong to be a chakho, or imperial tiger hunter. Those who were selected to be tiger hunters were the most skilled soldiers in the army; they were selected regardless of their social station or origins. He later confirms this by offering his services to Prince Chang, saying that he is a tiger hunter, and therefore is the best equipped to follow a trail. He is the most skilled marksman in the show (matchlock musket being a recent advent during the time of the series) and is also efficient in killing monsters with swords and knives.
