Sangju was the second-largest city in Joseon. It was located in the south of the country in Gyeongsang Province, which derived its name from the city. It was the hometown of Lord Ahn Hyeon, a former governor of the province who was a hero of the war against the Japanese. The fortress of Mungyeong Saejae was located just north of the city.
The crown prince, Lee Chang, and his party organized the defense of the Sangju against the infected in a bid to stop the plague sweeping through Gyeongsang.
